Threat to life and career of Gen. Fonseka posed by Govt.
At an urgently summoned Press briefing at Tans Asia Hotel today (27) , Deputy leader of the UNP said , following the tail end of the announcement of election results , the Govt. is posing a threat to the life and career of Gen. Fonseka the closest rival candidate of President R.ajapakse by holding him captive at the Hotel Trans asia where he is residing at the moment.

While the elections results are still not fully released , and there are raging allegations that there had been monumental election malpractices , the Govt. sending over 300 service personnel suddenly and restricting General’s free movements and confining him to the Hotel is deplorable and despicable , he added. Presidential candidate General Fonseka answers Govt.’s mudslinging and vilification
The Govt. which since the day Gen. Sarath Fonseka handed in his nominations for the Presidential election has been actively engaged in mudslinging against the General, has on the day of elections intensified this hate campaign with a humiliating defeat staring directly on its face.

Presidential election concludes – Northern voter turn out low
Sri Lanka’s 06th presidential election concluded today (26th) at 4.00 pm. At this election, 14,088,500 voters cast their vote at 11,098 polling centres island-wide. This election also recorded the highest number of contestants ever, numbering 22. Sources estimate that 65%-75% of voters cast their vote throughout the island. Although violence, intimidation and scare tactics were deployed, it did not make an adequate impact on the final count, confirms the Elections Commissioner. Chandrika’s request
Former President Chandrika Kumaratunge urged all supporters and member of the SLFP party to use the vote against corruption, family rule and bad governance; and vote for democracy in keeping with the Bandaranaike policies, with a view to building the country.

Early voting appeal by Ranil
Opposition and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe requested the voters to go to the polling station early morning tomorrow and cast their ballots.

He also urged them not to give into any threats or intimidation.

A Govt. Strategy to deceive the Tamil people by replacing the swan symbol by an Eagle
There are reports that the Govt. which is anticipating a humiliating defeat at the Presidential elections is trying another trickery aimed at deceiving the Tamil population by printing and distributing spurious ballot papers to various places in the North with misleading contents.
